Telepresence and Holography / Holograms - November 2008
Editor’s viewpoint on their differences, likenesses and future...
We all just recently viewed an historic CNN holographic interview on an historic Election Night. CNN stated this type of imaging has never been done before on National TV and I believe that. I haven’t seen anything like it. The live interview caught me by surprise and sure had the “wow” factor attached to it didn’t it? Here’s a link to the actual interview.
CNN Hologram Video
The question now has to be asked. Is it Telepresence?
I’m no expert on the subject but I’m going to throw my hat into the ring, go out on a limb and say yes, I believe it is. Although I know many video conferencing purists are rolling their eyes and grabbing their guns right about now with my statement.
While I do know that Telepresence still hasn’t been universally defined (Houston, we have a problem), here’s how I see it…. Broken down to its simplest form - “tele” (through electronic means) and “presence” (present). This is how I’m justifying my opinion by lumping holography and Telepresence together. Just as Telepresence is surely an offshoot of video conferencing, holographic imaging (like we viewed on CNN) surely has to be considered an offshoot of Telepresence. The interviewer was “telepresent” from Chicago and beamed into the CNN Election Headquarters. She was most assuredly - “telepresent”. There was negligible latency, the imaging was fantastic and both interviewers were rehearsed on what they would say. I’ve just recently read that CNN actually “downgraded” the experience to make it “movie” quality and not as good as it could have been. Maybe they thought us mere mortals would be shocked if they showed their complete hand. I have a feeling it was so big to them, they didn’t want it to get upstaged by the historic election. I’m willing to bet we’ll see the “true” power of this technology in the upcoming weeks and months when they can put the pedal to the medal and show it off without having it sidetracked.
What an amazing time for this technology (all differences and opinions aside). Telepresence Doctors, nurses, teachers, schools and healthcare (healthpresence) will benefit from the recent gains in this state-of-the-art industry whether holograms, Telepresence or holography. Airlines also have to see the threat to a portion of their business travel. Hell, who wants go through security and fly to Miami for a two-hour conference when you can look them in the eye via Telepresence?
Beam me up Scotty! Simply amazing…!

ST. LOUIS (Business Wire EON) December 4, 2007 -- "As today's enterprise applications grow more complex and delivery models migrate toward a software as-a-service approach, the underlying network infrastructure that supports these applications must respond," said Ted Chamberlin, Research Director at Gartner. "Enterprises now require virtualized infrastructure services configured to each application's unique needs to further optimize performance, scalability and delivery to end users. Vendors that can transport applications over infrastructure powered by virtualized delivery platforms on a utility basis will solve a growing customer pain point and take a leadership position in the market."
The SAVVIS ATN is a Tier 1 Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network serving approximately 20 percent of the world's Internet routes. It features the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System with Cisco IOS XR Software at the core, along with the Cisco XR 12000 Series Routers incorporating the Cisco Multi-Service Blade (MSB) as multi-service edge platforms. The CRS-1 and XR 12000 routers serve as access and integration points connecting SAVVIS' network and data centers.
SAVVIS' WAN enhancements include new core and edge routers that enable MPLS, high-speed metro Ethernet access, and enhanced end-to-end customer controlled QoS, which when combined with SAVVIS' monitoring and management enables high performance Application Transport Services (ATS) for public and private network enterprise needs (announced separately today).
Enhancements to the HAN augment the WAN upgrade and feature the deployment of the Cisco Application Control Engine (ACE) Blade and Firewall Services Module that is now in production in 13 SAVVIS data centers. This integrated Virtual Services Switch features a 10G network fabric with GigE and 10G customer handoffs significantly improving load balancing, SSL acceleration and security services, as well as enhancing SAVVIS' ability to provide a much broader range of virtualized utility services.
As part of the WAN and HAN integration, SAVVIS has deployed the Cisco Multi-Service Blade, which facilitates virtual firewalls and is integrated with the Cisco XR 12000 Series Router. This enhances security performance and flexibility for SAVVIS customers as it now enables a second generation of in-the-cloud, virtual firewalls. The new virtual firewalls enable improved customer QoS control, higher capacity, and more firewall features to better satisfy customer security requirements. The MSB also provides a platform for SAVVIS to deploy additional advanced defense-in-depth models, and greater return on investment to SAVVIS customers than conventional dedicated firewalls.
"Cisco and SAVVIS share a vision for delivering software as a service and for developing highly responsive IT infrastructure optimized for application performance and availability," said Bob McIntyre, chief technical officer of the service provider technology group at Cisco. "The application of the Cisco IP Next-Generation Network architecture to SAVVIS' network and hosting infrastructure enables the virtualization of advanced services and presents a compelling IT solution to business and government entities."
"This is a milestone in the realization of SAVVIS' vision for an integrated IT service delivery model, where data centers serve as nodes on a global network," said Bryan Doerr, chief technical officer of SAVVIS. "Our advanced and integrated network and hosting services are positioned to improve enterprise application delivery by providing our customers with access to the latest technologies and virtualization platforms, fully integrated, and available as a service. Working with Cisco we have created a unique service provider model focused entirely on the needs of business and government applications making it possible for organizations of all sizes and missions to achieve high levels of availability, security, and control for ERP, CRM, B2B, eCommerce, and SaaS application types."
